Decatur Township is home to the Decatur Township Civic Council as well as the Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township. Further, the Indianapolis Challenger Center also calls Decatur Township home. The township was originally settled in the 1820s by Quakers who had moved into the area from South Carolina. There are still many residents in the township and within Camby who can trace their heritage back to these original Quaker settlers. The township itself was named for Stephen Decatur, a United States naval officer and commodore who served during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
