The city is home to the Johnstown Jets, who were a professional ice hockey team founded in 1950. In 1973, the team joined the North American Hockey League and eventually the team dissolved in 1977 after a major flood in the town destroyed the team's arena and ice making equipment. In 1988, the city saw its hockey team revived with the Johnstown Chiefs. The team stayed with the city until 2010 when it decided to relocate to an area in South Carolina. After 2012, the NAHL team the Alaska Avalanche chose to relocate to Johnstown and was renamed the Johnstown Tomahawks, where it has remained for the last several years.
