Middletown started out as a small town, but it grew more than 200 percent between 2000 and 2010. This growth was stimulated by land annexation, and there are now more than 18,000 residents within city limits. Residents are served by the Middletown Electric Department, the Middletown Free-Standing Emergency Department, the Middletown Police Department and the Appoquinimink School District. This school district was forced to grow during the town's population boom, so students may now attend Middletown High School or Appoquinimink High School. There is also a new elementary school serving the city.
