In the 1960s, Piqua was known as Atomic City for its Piqua Nuclear Generating Station. The plant was an Atomic Energy Commission demonstration project and the first municipally-owned nuclear power plant in the country. It closed in 1966 but not before it inspired the name of a car battery, Piqua Atomic Power Plant. The Department of Energy is currently renovating the site. Today, Piqua has more traditional businesses, with manufacturing, healthcare, retail, accommodation and food services and education the dominant local industries.
