The city that we now know as Tecumseh, Oklahoma, was originally settled in 1891. The area was well known for its cotton fields and other agricultural operations, which allowed the population to grow from around 1,200 residents in 1900 to more than 2,000 residents in 1930. Once prices for cotton dropped, the population dipped and then came back quickly in 1970. In 2015, it was estimated that more than 6,500 people resided within Tecumseh city limits. Today, the city is known as home to the Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center. This facility was originally an orphanage and mental health center known as Girls Town. It’s now under the control of the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs and serves as a primary employer for the Tecumseh area.
