In 1825, General John Americus Smith bought a plot of land in the area and built a successful plantation. Less than ten years later, other settlers followed suit, and the town of Americus was founded. In the late nineteenth century, the state's only privately financed railroad was established by attorney Samuel H Hawkins. This propelled the city into the position of eighth largest across the state, and Americus was known from then on as the "Metropolis of Southwest Georgia." In the early twentieth century, Reverend Dr. Major W. Reddick founded the Americus Institute for the education and betterment of African American children in the area. Though the institute no longer stands, its memory lives on. The Americus Historic District was established in the National Registry of Historic Districts in 1979. In 1986, a Preservation Ordinance was passed by the Mayor and City Council to protect the district and make it a regional landmark. The district stretches from Lee Street out to Oak Grove Cemetery.
